French is introduced in year five. We aim to develop the ability and confidence to use the language effectively for purposes of practical communication and to encourage a positive attitude to learning a foreign language.

A variety of resources and materials are used with a multi-skill approach being encouraged. We also have the use of a native-speaking French ‘assistant’ for two hours a week from October to June each year. A French computer club is held regularly at lunchtimes to reinforce work covered in lessons and includes access to the Internet.

A visit to Brittany in the summer term for members of year seven and eight is arranged annually. In addition pupils are encouraged to pursue links with schools in France through the exchange of cassettes and letters.
